Former Sindh information minister Sharjeel Inam Memon was arrested after the Sindh High Court (SHC) rejected his bail plea in a 6-billion graft case relating to the award of advertisements at ‘exorbitant rates’.
According to television channels, Memon decided to challenge the SHC order in the Supreme Court to dodge arrest, but that didn’t occur. As soon as he stepped out of the courtroom, Rangers and NAB officials waiting outside arrested him.
Along with former provincial information secretary Zulfiqar Shalwani and others, Memon is facing a NAB case involving financial corruption of a whopping 6 billion rupees.
After returning to Pakistan from self-imposed exile in March this year, the PPP leader obtained protective bail in April in connection with an inquiry initiated by the National Accountability Bureau (NAB).
The former information minister had fled to Dubai in 2015 after the anti-graft watchdog mounted a crackdown against allegedly corrupt political figures and bureaucrats as part of the Karachi operation.
NAB later filed a reference in the accountability court regarding alleged corruption in the advertisements campaign of the provincial information department.
With the disqualification of former prime minister Nawaz Sharif by the Supreme Court on corruption charges and the latest arrest of Sharjeel Memon, the state has shown its dogged resolve to rid the country of the scourge of corruption.
People like Sharjeel Memon and others of his ilk responsible for the economic debacle of this country must be brought to book and given exemplary punishment as a deterrent for others. Only then can Pakistan be on track to progress and prosperity.
