Inter Milan has been touting its postponed match against Bologna as a chance to gain distance in the championship race for four months.
Inter, meanwhile, were defeated 2-1 by Bologna on Wednesday, as a goalkeeping error cost them a lead and a chance to recover first place in Serie A.
With four games remaining, defending champion Inter is two points behind city rival AC Milan.
Following a back injury with Samir Handanovic, reserve goalkeeper Ionut Radu was forced into action for the first time in over a year and was to fault for Bologna’s winner.
Radu booted the ball toward his own net while attempting to clear a throw-in, and Bologna’s Nicola Sansone provided the last touch to ensure it went in.
Marko Arnautovic, a former Inter Milan striker, equalised for Bologna after Ivan Perisic had placed Inter ahead early on.
Due to a coronavirus epidemic among Bologna’s team, the match was postponed from January.
In two other postponed matches, Fiorentina and Atalanta both squandered chances to improve their hopes of qualifying for Europe.
Fiorentina, in seventh position, was defeated 4-0 at home by Udinese, marking the Viola’s second consecutive loss.
Udinese, which is in 12th place, got goals from Pablo Mari, Gerard Deulofeu, Wallace, and Destiny Udogie.
Atalanta had to work hard for a 4-4 draw against Torino at home, with Luis Muriel scoring his second penalty of the night in the 84th minute to level the score.
