In court, private facts about Johnny Depp and Amber Heard’s relationship are being revealed, including what their former marital counsellor calls “mutual abuse” between the actors.
Depp, 58, is suing Heard, 36, for defamation after she penned an op-ed for The Washington Post in 2018 in which she discussed surviving domestic abuse. The $50 million case was initially filed in 2019, but it was postponed due to the epidemic until a jury was chosen on April 11 in Fairfax, Virginia, and opening remarks began the next day.
Depp lost his widely publicised U.K. libel action against British newspaper The Sun for labelling him a “wife-beater” in November 2020. The outlet’s accusations were found to be “basically truthful” by the court, and Heard testified to back up the claims. His appeal to reverse the judgement was rejected in March 2021.
He is, however, suing Heard personally in this case.
The couple met while filming The Rum Diary in 2011 and married in 2015. Heard filed for a domestic violence restraining order against him in May 2016, alleging him of beating her. Depp rejected the allegations, and the couple reached an out-of-court settlement in August 2016.
Depp has stated that his “objective is the truth” as he works to clear his reputation in the trial, which is being broadcast live on many platforms. Heard, who has yet to take the stand in the trial, stated in a statement before the start of the trial that “Hopefully, when this matter is over, both Johnny and I will be able to move on. I’ve always had feelings for Johnny, and it hurts me a lot to have to live out the events of our prior lives in front of the public.”

Heard accuses Depp of sexual assault
While most of the material in this case had previously been made public in the 2020 U.K. case, Heard’s claim of sexual assault and other types of domestic violence was not publicly known until the opening remarks.
Domestic violence by Depp “takes many forms,” including physical, emotional, verbal, and psychological torture, according to the Aquaman actress’ attorney, Ben Rottenborn. He went on to say that she “did experience sexual abuse at the hands of Depp… You will hear about the trauma she endured in the most vivid and horrible ways. That’s something she’ll tell you straight. She’ll take the witness stand and tell you that. It took place.”
Depp’s representative dismissed the allegations as “fanciful” and “for the sake of Hollywood shock value, which Amber has perfected and exploited a genuine social movement.”
Depp previously texted about Heard’s “rotting corpse”
The jury has heard several of Depp and Heard’s previous works read aloud. One of these was a message Depp sent to his longtime buddy Isaac Baruch in October 2016, in which Depp wrote, “Hopefully that c—-‘s decaying carcass is festering in the f——-g trunk of a Honda Civic!!”
Depp said under cross questioning that he is “not proud of any of the words that I used” in the explicit texts.
Other messages from Depp that were brought up in court included one about drowning and burning Heard, with the addition, “I will f—- her roasted body afterwards to make sure she is dead.”
Depp says daughter Lily-Rose skipped his wedding to Heard
Depp said that his daughter Lily-Rose rejected to attend his February 2015 wedding to Heard (which had “Dinner, dancing, and drugs” inscribed on printed schedules of the events, according to Depp).
“Lily-Rose, my daughter, did not attend the wedding. For a variety of reasons, she and Ms. Heard were not on the best of terms “he stated
The 22-year-old actress is Depp’s oldest daughter from his previous relationship with Vanessa Paradis. They also have a 20-year-old son named Jack.
Depp and his sister recall abusive childhood
Both Depp and his elder sister Christi Dembrowski have stated that their late mother Betty Sue Palmer, as well as their father John Sr., was violent to them as children.
“When Betty Sue, my mother, would go off on a tangent toward my father — and of course, it didn’t matter to her in front of the kids — he remained amazingly stoic and never, as she was rationing him with horrible things, he stood there and just looked at her while she delivered the pain, and he swallowed it.” “He took it,” Depp remarked.
Depp stated why he stayed in his marriage with Heard despite the allegations of abuse: “I’m guessing it’s because my father chose to stay [in his abusive marriage]…. And I didn’t want to let myself down. I wanted to see if there was a way to make it work. I believed I might be able to assist her. I hoped I might persuade her to change her mind. Because the Amber Heard I knew for the first year or year and a half was not this, this adversary. It wasn’t my girl; she had turned against me.”
Depp testifies that he’s done drugs with friends Paul Bettany and Marilyn Manson before
Depp admitted to using recreational drugs with prominent pals including WandaVision actor Paul Bettany and notorious artist Marilyn Manson while addressing his earlier issues with substance abuse.
When Rottenborn questioned if Bettany was a good actor, Bettany said yes “”You’ve done drugs with a close friend?” Depp answered “yes” after remarking, “That’s an odd question.” Yes, Paul Bettany is a good pal.” Together, they directed The Tourist (2010), Transcendence (2014), and Mortdecai (2015).
Depp later remarked, “We’ve had cocaine together maybe a couple of times,” and quipped, “I once gave Marilyn Manson a tablet so he wouldn’t talk so much.”
Bettany and Manson’s representatives did not reply to PEOPLE’s requests for comment.
Depp shows off his healed “mangled” finger from Australia fight
In this example, a notorious fight between Depp and Heard occurred in March 2015 in Australia, while Depp was shooting Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales. His right middle finger was amputated at the tip as a consequence. He claims it happened when Heard flung a vodka bottle at his hand while it was resting on a bar top, but her legal team denies it.
Depp’s lawyers revealed gruesome, gory images of the finger taken that night and in the hospital after he told doctors it happened when his hand got stuck in an accordion door during his evidence. He alleges he lied at the hospital to keep Heard’s identity hidden.
Heard has admitted to starting physical fight
Heard admits to starting a physical fight in audio recordings presented by Depp’s legal team, and she argued with him that she didn’t “punch” him but “struck” him.
“You weren’t punched; you were struck. I’m sorry for the way I hit you, but I didn’t punch you “Depp was informed by her. “I did not f——-g f——-g f——-g f——-g f— I was f——-g slamming into you. I’m not sure what my real hand motion was. You, on the other hand, are fine. You were not harmed by me. I didn’t throw a punch at you. I was slamming you “She was overheard saying.
She added the following to the audio: “I’m not going to sit here whining about it, am I? Yes, you are. That is the distinction between you and me. You’re an f——-g baby, f——-g baby, f——-g baby, f— You’re such a knucklehead. Johnny, you need to grow up.”
Depp was also questioned about a December 2015 incident in which he reportedly head-butted Heard, leaving her with bruises on her face. Depp has stated under oath that he has never assaulted Heard or any woman. He “vehemently” denied that he deliberately head-butted her, claiming that it may have been an accident while attempting to subdue her.
Heard’s legal team included a video she shot of Depp slamming cabinet doors in their kitchen one morning, and another piece of audio showed Depp slamming cabinet doors in their kitchen one morning.
