Pak vs. WI: PCB considers inserting backup players in ODI team

ISLAMABAD: According to The News, the Pakistan Cricket Board’s (PCB) think-tank and selectors are considering including some of the backup players in the forthcoming three-match One-Day series against the West Indies.

According to reliable sources, a meeting on Wednesday reviewed a number of options for the upcoming ODI series against the Windies.

The talks examined whether leading players should be called back from ongoing county cricket in England or whether backup players should be included in the squad.

They said the meeting heard requests to maintain some of the top players in county cricket, such as Shaheen Shah Afridi and Hassan Ali, and to invite certain backup cricketers, such as Mohammad Wasim Jr, Shahnawaz Dhani, and others, to play ODI series commencing June 7.

The meeting was also concerned that fielding a poor team against the West Indies would be useless.

“Because the three matches are part of the World Cup qualification cycle for 2023, any unnecessary risk could put the hosts in jeopardy.” “Nothing has been finalised yet,” a Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) insider said.

Leading PCB players have spent the last two days conferring about the formation of camp probables for the series and the greatest potential combination against the West Indies.

“There were strong arguments that disrupting the existing county engagements of all the leading cricketers would be a bad idea because they would be facing a tough and long season ahead.” Rather, a select few top players should be permitted to play County Cricket till they join the team for the Holland series and then the two-match Test series against Sri Lanka.

Before making a final decision, the consultation process would continue for a few days.”

The strength of camp probables for the West Indies series was also discussed.

“The PCB may invite a significant number of camp hopefuls.” The choice will preserve the backup strength as well as the multiple options for a larger pool for the upcoming international season. Pakistan has never had such strong international obligations before, so keeping the backup strength on their toes throughout the season is essential,” the source noted.

Meanwhile, the PCB awaited the conclusion of political manoeuvring to determine the location for the three-match ODI series against the West Indies.
