Mercedes-Benz verified all is genuine just one week after reports about a record-setting vehicle auction gripped the automotive world. The Mercedes-Benz 300 SLR Uhlenhaut Coupe, of which only two exist, is officially the most expensive car in the world. And the price is incredible: 135 million euros, or $143.1 million at today’s exchange rates.
It’s a world-record price that more than doubles the $70 million Ferrari 250 GTO sold in 2018. The auction, which took place on May 5 at the Mercedes-Benz Museum, was organised by RM Sotheby’s. As you might expect, this was a private, invitation-only event attended by “customers and international collectors of cars and art who share Mercedes-Benz corporate values,” according to Mercedes. The high-name bidder’s will remain unknown, but the SLR’s new owner will make it available for display on special occasions as part of the transaction.
“With the Mercedes-Benz Fund, we hope to inspire a new generation to follow in Rudolf Uhlenhaut’s pioneering footsteps and create incredible new technologies, especially those that assist the essential goals of decarbonization and resource preservation,” said Mercedes-Benz CEO Ola Källenius. “At the same time, reaching the highest price ever paid for a vehicle is both remarkable and humbling: a Mercedes-Benz is by far the most valuable car on the planet.”
