Katy Perry just performed the ultimate flex in the fashion industry.
The superstar singer and American Idol judge, who is now headlining her own Las Vegas residency, has purchased the entire Katy Perry Collections footwear company from Global Brands Group, and has taken over as CEO. Perry is relaunching the line, which first appeared in 2017, and the new spring/summer 2022 collection indicates she’s just getting started.
As Katy Perry Collections approaches its fifth anniversary, the singer thinks it’s “time to swing harder, bigger, and better” with footwear designs.
Perry tells PEOPLE in this week’s issue, “I’m delighted to take it to the next level,” adding that the relaunch collection has “great individuality for the price point.” Everything from gingham pumps to jelly sandals (her go-to for playdates) is available for $39 to $129.
Perry claims she gets design ideas from “anywhere.”
“As a singer, I get the opportunity to travel the world and experience all the different places in the world, as well as people, cultures, textiles, and stuff — and I’m like a sponge,” she tells PEOPLE. “I’m both an absorber and a watcher.” I do the same thing with my songs. And then I put all I’ve learned together into a product.
The actress goes on to say that she has always known that fashion would be a part of her destiny.
“‘What would you be if you weren’t a pop star?’ people always wonder. ‘Well, I would’ve worked in fashion in some capacity,’ I usually say. I’m doing that right now.”
Perry also comments on her fearless fashion choices over the previous decade in this week’s edition of PEOPLE.
“I usually choose the path less travelled when it comes to dressing up,” she tells PEOPLE. “I was born with a fearlessness that instilled confidence in me. Everything was on a low budget when I first started [my profession]. Etsy is where I got a lot of my items. It was a jumble of unique crafts and oddities that no one else had. I was dismissed by the fashion world. However, I believe it has become more playful in recent years.”
