In the former couple’s high-profile defamation trial, jurors were told that Amber Heard gave Johnny Depp a big knife as a gift during their love relationship.
On Tuesday, the Aquaman actress was interrogated by Depp’s attorney in a courtroom in Fairfax, Virginia, where she was questioned about her allegations that her ex-husband severely attacked her on many occasions.
The Pirates of the Caribbean actor’s lawyer questioned why Heard would hand a weapon to her husband when he was already reportedly torturing her.
Heard said that the violence started early in their relationship, in 2011, and ended in 2012.
“Did you give that knife to the man who was abusing you?” questioned the lawyer
Heard replied that she didn’t think he’d stab her with a knife.
She told the court, “I wasn’t terrified of him stabbing me.”
The knife, which is etched with the words “hasta la muerte” – which means “until death” in Spanish – had already been presented to the court.
Depp’s legal team had previously questioned psychologist Dr Daswn Hughes on whether someone who was “afraid for her life” would give this to their spouse.
The doctor told the court that there is “context” and that Ms Heard purchased the knife as a “kind gift.”
“Mr Depp told her ‘the only way out of this relationship is death,'” Dr Hughes explained.
Ms. Heard, according to the doctor, was in “denial” about the “violence in the relationship” at the time.
