Loadshedding would be reduced to three and a half hours from tomorrow, PML-N leader and former Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi said on Tuesday.
He made the statement alongside State Minister for Petroleum Musadik Malik, Minister of Power Khurram Dastgir Khan, and Information Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb during a press conference.
Abbasi began the press conference by outlining the causes of the energy shortage, blaming the previous administration. During the summer, the country’s electrical demand exceeded 25,000MW, he claimed.
He noted that when the current government took office, the electricity generation capacity was 17,000MW, which had since been boosted to almost 21,000MW in the last three weeks.
He went on to state that the government and cabinet were sorry about the current loadshedding, but that they needed more time to address the problems.
“Today, we are producing 21,000MW, which means we have a 4,000MW deficiency,” he added, adding that the supply and demand imbalance required a little more than four hours of loadshedding to close.
The PML-N leader went on to say that the government was not interested in making excuses and was instead focused on resolving the country’s problems.
He slammed the previous government for lying about power plant construction, claiming that Pakistan would be unable to meet its summer electrical demand.
The press meeting comes days after Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif directed officials to develop a “emergency strategy” to reduce electrical loadshedding within 24 hours.
On Saturday, he gave the orders while presiding over a meeting. The conference took place in the wake of reports of hours-long loadshedding in several parts of the country, causing people to suffer in extreme heat.

The five-hour meeting looked at the country’s load-shedding crisis and explored ways to address the electrical shortage.
Defense Minister Khawaja Asif urged over the weekend that the country take use of the “365 days of sunshine” and operate markets during the day instead of the traditional “opening marketplaces at 1pm and closing them at 1am.”
“Our marketplaces are open from 1 p.m. until 1 a.m. Asif had tweeted late Saturday night, “This [practise] is found nowhere in the globe.” “God has blessed our country with 365 days of brightness, yet we conduct business in the dark.”
With Karachi excluded, 3,500MW of electricity can be saved if markets determine the correct business hours.
