Nawaz Sharif is history—this is the fact that continues to elude the former prime minister who was disqualified by the Supreme Court on July 28 this year.
Not only has Nawaz Sharif not been able to come to terms with the reality of his disqualification, he has been on the collision course with the judiciary and the army which he strongly believes has orchestrated his ouster.
And he’s not alone in heaping scorn on the two vital state institutions; his daughter, Maryam Nawaz, has emerged a more ardent rival who’s taking potshots through her venomous tweets and statements on a daily basis.
In one of his recent statements against his case in NAB, the ouster prime minister has alleged that there are forces at play that seek to punish him through NAB. This was obviously a veiled reference to the apex court, and by extension, the army. His daughter—who is naturally aggrieved over her father’s disqualification— has also been equally ruthless in lambasting the courts and the judges, but in her litany of unwarranted grievances against the judiciary, she tends to forget that her father failed to produce even a single document in the court that could tilt the judgment in his favor.
Political commentators suggest that the courts’ attitude towards Nawaz Sharif has always been lenient in the past, with barely a single judgment delivered against him; however, now that the tables are turned and he is finally hemmed in over grave corruption charges, the same Nawaz Sharif has started spewing venom against the judiciary. It must be noted that it was the same Nawaz Sharif who hailed the apex court’s verdict which ousted the former premier Yousuf Raza Gilani.
Despite the fact that the accountability court has shown a high degree of leniency to the ousted prime minister, he still continues to lash it out with impunity, which is uncalled for and amounts of the contempt of court.
Kudos to the patient judiciary that still hasn’t summoned the father and daughter over the contempt of court charges, but the ousted prime minister’s dangerous brinkmanship against the judiciary does not bode well for democracy.
He and his daughter must learn to respect the institutions and weigh their words carefully before uttering them.
