NA 240 By election 2022: One dead, various injured

As violence disrupted the voting, one person was murdered after being shot during the by-election in the port city’s NA-240 seat, while several others were injured.

The deceased, identified as 60-year-old Saifullah, died when he was brought to Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Center (JPMC), according to JPMC officials.

Officials from the administration reported that five persons were taken to the hospital with injuries, some of which were caused by gunshots and others by being beaten with sticks.

The event occurred as political activity in the constituency — which includes parts of Korangi and Landhi — increased, with political parties vying for the NA seat.

On the seat that became empty after MQM-P MNA Muhammad Ali Khan died this year on April 19, voting continued uninterrupted till 5 p.m.

There were 25 candidates running for the seat, including Abu Bakr of the MQM-P, Rafi Uddin Faisal of the Mohajir Qaumi Movement, Shabbir Qaimkhani of the Pak Sarzameen Party (PSP), Nasir-Lodhi of the PPP, and Kashif Qadri of the TLP. The by-elections were boycotted by the PTI and the JI.

PSP chairman Mustafa Kamal acknowledged to media that the deceased was a member of his party, and that numerous others were in severe condition.

“He was a member of our party who lived in Baldia and was elderly. The TLP attacked us and killed a member of my party,” the PSP chairman claimed, denying the TLP’s assertion that they were attacked.

TLP ‘killed party member’

No one would be able to start fire at their offices and return safely if the PSP had utilised guns, according to Kamal. “They (the TLP) are lying. I implore the government to apprehend them or provide us with firearms.”

Kamal denied that his group used violence, saying that the “lives of his party members were very dear to him” and that he wanted action taken against TLP for reportedly shooting down one of his members.

Kamal was there when the shooting occurred during the by-elections, which had a low voter turnout due to the violent conflicts.
