An ex-jailer from Iowa Kayla Mae Bergom is accused of engaging in repeated sexual encounters with a prisoner there, including intimate encounters in a utility closet and a months-long relationship in the recreation yard.
According to Cedar Rapids newspaper The Gazette, Kayla Mae Bergom, 27, will go on trial on August 12 for having sex with the anonymous 29-year-old prisoner on numerous occasions in 2020 and 2021 at various locations within the Tama County facility.
Following an investigation by the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation, Bergom, of Belle Plaine, was charged with three misdemeanour charges of sexual misconduct in May. She made a not guilty plea.
According to a Tama-Toledo News Chronicle arrest report, Bergom was detained on April 20 by the Tama County Sheriff’s Office. She received a pretrial release the following day.
After three years of employment there, she announced her resignation, according to Tama County Sheriff Dennis Kucera.
She might spend up to six years in prison if found guilty, according to The Gazette.
